An evening prayer

An evening prayer

As the day draws to a close and the shadows of surrounding objects begin to grow longer and longer, I know that evening is a breath away. With the evening comes a time of introspection, a remembering of the day: things accomplished and things left undone; of longings left unfulfilled; of hopes for a new day.

The Sunday, May 27, 2012 lectionary text from Romans 8:22-27 speaks of that hope for a new day; a hope in something that we know is coming–that we’ve glimpsed but not yet fully experienced or seen, for who hopes for what is seen?

An evening prayer

God of shadow and of light, grant us peace this night,
that in our sleeping and in our sighing
you might find our longings that words cannot express
and in our waking, the patience to wait for what we cannot see.
